After 'The Japanese wife' Raima Sen looking forward to 'Mirch'

Basking in the glory of her widely appreciated performance in Aparna Sen's film 'The Japanese Wife', actress Raima Sen eagerly awaits the release of her Hindi film 'Mirch' directed by Vinay Shukla who had introduced her to Bollywood with 'Godmother'.

"This is my second film with Vinay Shukla, who had directed me in Godmother and I have lots of hopes for Mirch because of the treatment," Raima said.

Of the four women-centric stories in the film, Sen will turn up in two, opposite Shreyas Talpade and Rajpal Yadav with each story sharing a common humorous strand.

Although Raima enjoys a superb track record in Bengali cinema the 30-year-old actress insists that she is not averse to any substantial commercial Bollywood project with a good script and competent directors.

"Look, I am open to commercial films, For every 'Godmother', 'Chokher Bali', 'Daman', I have done 'Parineeta', 'Honeymoon Travels' and 'Manorama Six Feet Under'. I cannot be typecast for one type of roles only," Raima, grand daughter of legendary actress Suchitra Sen and daughter of film diva Moon Moon Sen, said.

"I am ready to mould my image, I am ready to essay a role if that interests me. But certainly the offer has to come to me," Raima said.

The actress, who is being appreciated for her role of a widow 'Sandhya' in 'The Japanese Wife', said that it was one of the most complex roles of her life as it was a challenge to bring out the understated performance and reflect the blank, matured and calm persona of the character.

She plays the mother of an eight-year-old boy, who mostly keeps silent, but lives like a shadow in the life of a village school teacher Snehamoy, played by Rahul Bose, despite not having any manifest relationship with him.

"I remember I was asked by Aparna Sen to get the expressions right, the look of a lowly placed widow in a rural area, to develop her body language. I also attended a workshop which helped. I am happy that Sen liked my role," Raima said.

Referring to her on-screen chemistry with Rahul Bose Raima says that the actor is someone who she is very comfortable to work with.

"We had shared screen space in Anuranan by Aniruddha Roy Choudhury. I guess we vibe well. He is such a wonderful co-actor, so very natural and spontaneous," she said.

"While I would like to do more films with Rinamashi (Aparna Sen), I have already been associated with a lot of works of Rituparno who similarly extracts intense performance from his actors," she said.

Raima, who has worked with filmmaker-actor Rituparno Ghosh in 'Antarmahal' and 'Khela' besides 'Chokher Bali' also has a special cameo in his 'Sunglass'.

Asked about 'Nouka Dubi', Rituparno's next Tagore film, Raima explained though it features both her and sister Riya Sen, they would not be sharing the frame.

"Our roles are diverse, but I am happy to be in the same project with my sister. This is our first film together," Raima said.

The actress is also set to share the screen with Deepti Naval and Rituparno in upcoming film 'Asamapt'.

"While my role is that of an art director in a comp any, Rituparno enacts the creative head. Deepti Naval is the mother of a dead child who is the only link among three of us," she says without divulging any other detail.

Bollywood needs more experiments in Horror: RGV

The maker of 'Raat' and 'Bhoot', Ram Gopal Verma is back with another scary flick 'Phoonk 2' but the director says that we still have a long way to go in exploring the genre when compared to Hollywood
.

Bollywood has been churning out horror flicks off late like Vikram Bhatt's 'Shaapit' and Sneha Ullal, Shreyas Talpade starrer 'Click' but the films have not been able to attract the audiences to the theater.

And in comparison, Hollywood's small-budgeted 'Paranormal Activity' had a become rage evoking a great response from all over the world.

But Verma chooses to be optimistic.

"The attempt is there. One should understand that for every 'Paranormal Activity', Hollywood has made hundred flop films. So we need to make hundred bad ones to finally make one super spooky film. Its a process.

And moreover, we are always 15 years behind Hollywood in everything so I think it'll take some time but as I said attempt is there," Verma said.

But one wonders that how can a filmmaker, who has successfully scared the audiences before not have a perfect formula.

"Some films click and some don't but one needs to keep on exploring. You see scare can be of two kinds. One, which scares you due to complete helpless situation you catch yourself into and the other which just plain scares your senses. 'Bhoot' fell into second category and that is why it clicked," Verma said.

Apart from 'Bhoot', Verma has also given hits like 'Darna Mana Hai' and its sequel 'Darna Zaroori Hai' but his 'Phoonk' could not give a chill in the spine.

But Verma defended and said, "Quite a few people said that it's not a scary film and there is a reason to that.

'Phoonk' was not a straight in your face kind of scary film because it was about superstition and it would not effect you until you have been in that situation." So what should be expected from the sequel, 'Phoonk 2'?

"Phoonk 2's intention is plain and simple as to just scare the audience's pants off," Verma said.

The 48-year-old filmmaker also comes back with his challenge of Rs 5 lakh to the one who can watch the film without being spooked but this time it is a little more tough.

"During Phoonk we did something like this but the guy could not see the film and he ran off but people thought the challenge was rigged. This time we decided to make it more challenging and transparent. We intend to fit an ECG machine to the contestant and monitor his heartbeat and if it goes higher even once that means he has been scared and the person loses. This will all be shown to the media live," he said.

And Verma claims to have won the challenge as a Mumbai-based contestant Hitesh Sharma could not keep his heartbeat stable after 45 minutes of watching the film.

The sequel takes the story of Rajiv and his family to the next level as the spirit of the evil woman, killed in the first film, comes back from the dead and murders the Tantrik, the family's only saviour. What follows is the brutalities by the ghost on the vulnerable family.

The Milind Gadagka directed film is set to hit the theaters on April 16.

Aa bhi ja sanam, teri baahon mein

Rock this party tonight
Rock this party tonight

O mere khuda (dil hua fida, rock this party tonight)
O mere khuda, dil hua fida
Bekhabar do jahan se main hua
O mere khuda, dil hua fida
Haadsa ye na jaane kab hua
O mere khuda

Khwabon mein sirf main aaunga, palkon mein main to reh jaaunga
Yaadon mein aks hoga mera, kisi ko milega nahin mera ptaa
O mere khuda, dil hua fida
Bekhabar do jahan se main hua
O mere khuda, dil hua fida
Haadsa ye na jaane kab hua

Aa bhi ja sanam, yun na kar sitam
Teri baahon mein marr mitenge hum
Aa bhi ja sanam, yun na kar sitam
Teri baahon mein marr mitenge hum

Hey tanha raaton mein baatein hongi
Unh baaton mein biraatein hongi
Badla badla zamana saara
Jab se badli meri ye duniya
O mere khuda, dil hua fida
Bekhabar do jahan se main hua
O mere khuda, dil hua fida
